7 Keynote Address 1 Day 1: 28 March 2022 (Monday), 1100 – 1200 Education beyond 21st Century Professor John Lee Chi-Kin UNESCO Chair in Regional Education Development and Lifelong Learning Chair Professor of Curriculum and Instruction The Education University of Hong Kong Over the past decade, education has been evolving and reshaping by ever-changing technology and innovations as well as challenges such as the impact of COVID-19, taking into account the new trend of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Metadata. In November 2021, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 2021) released a report titled “Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education", which presents a forward-looking vision of what education and learning might yet become in our shared future as we look to 2050 and beyond. The report stated that “Education must additionally play a role in steering technological innovation and the digital transformation of societies.” (p.80), in which education and technology are mutually interacting and sharing the fruits of development. Technological innovation, however, has its limits. Scientific and technological innovation in the education of students as well as regional and international educators could be compromised by insufficient resources and lack of systematic hardware follow-up. In some cases, the use of technological innovation in education might be developed without proper guidance and adequate provision of training. As the UNESCO Chair in Regional Education Development and Lifelong Learning, Professor John Lee personally views that teachers play a variety of yet significant roles in the education beyond the 21st century, including facilitator, values educator, decision-maker, curriculum developer, etc. Teacher education needs to face the challenge to how to nurture teachers with strong professionalism, repertoire of teaching strategies and technology. Keynote Address 2 Day 2: 29 March 2022 (Tuesday), 0900 -1000 Technology in Education the Way Forward & Future Horizon Dr. Sumitra Nair Senior Vice President & Head - Strategy & Policy Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) The widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the rapid use of digital technology in education. At the same time, students who do not have access to technology, be it devices or connectivity, have fallen further behind. Within the jobmarket, automation is changing jobs and skills needed for future of work. These changes are expected to reduce many existing jobs, yet will create many more new jobs, mainly jobs that require digital tech skills. While technology may displace many, it can also help to accelerate re-skilling and up-skilling. Hence, technology can be a boon and a bane for the future of education and work. Whatever the case, it is now apparent that technology adoption and integration into education and talent development is no longer an option. Given the hyper connectedness of technology and fast changing nature of education and work, there is a need for agile and flexible education policies to ensure that education outcomes are consistent with the needs of the 4th industrial revolution. To this end, the keynote address will share some of the emerging trends and best practices of technology in education. Abstract of Keynote Addresses
